What kind of training do you do?
Our most common training is in Asset Based Community Development (ABCD). We specialize in applying the principles of ABCD to community engagement projects, community organizing and community based programs. We train organizations and agencies in how to make their programs more effective by tapping into the beneficiaries and participants in programs and services.
We also provide training in how to make organizations more effective. These trainings range from running good meetings to organizing volunteers to achieving sustainability. We also work with nonprofit organizations and community groups on how to effectively advocate without violating lobbying laws.
What types of groups or audiences do you train?
We specialize in working with small and medium size nonprofit organizations that work in lower and middle income communities. Our experience includes working with faith based groups, youth focused organizations and organizations that are predominantly African-American, Latino or Southeast Asian. Our partners give us the capacity to offer some trainings in Spanish, Russian, Hmong and Vietnamese.
We work with you to make sure you have the training and technical assistance that fits for your group – we never pull a training “off the shelf” and deliver it without working to customize it for the context and purpose of your group. This includes size of audience – we've facilitated board retreats of 8 people and delivered keynote addresses to 1,000.
We have had training, but are having trouble putting it into practice in our organization. Can you work with us on that?
Yes! We do on-site technical assistance to help you identify and implement changes in your organization so it can better meet your goals. We specialize in helping organizations identify and carry out changes by using methods that include employees, board members, volunteers and other stakeholders. Change is always hard, but it is more enjoyable and effective when everyone has a role in the process and is pulling the same direction.
Do you work with local governments?
Some of our most effective projects have been in partnership with local governments. We do trainings and community facilitation that local government is not staffed or positioned to do. We also work with local school districts that are working to achieve a higher level of parent and community engagement. We particularly enjoy working in situations where we can help the community and local government make each other more effective at reaching common goals. These projects are usually done with a combination of training and technical assistance.
But what does ABCD training look like?
